Daily Routine

The goal of the time in the Montessori environment for children ages 3-6 years old is for the children to learn how to adapt to their surroundings as future members and change agents of our society. The entire classroom environment is constructed just for the children’s use and maximizes independence, community, and exploration.

During the day, children in Lirio Montessori will have uninterrupted work time in the classroom where they are free to choose work they have already had presentations on and repeat that work for as long as they desire during the work period. There are four areas of work in the environment – practical life, sensorial work, language work, and math work. Children will be offered presentations individually or in small groups by the teacher leader. The children prepare their own snacks, garden, eat lunch communally, care for their environment, and explore the outdoors together.

There is nothing more beautiful and hope instilling than seeing children developing the confidence, self-esteem and agency as they engage in the meaningful and self selected work in the Montessori environment.

Our Teacher Leaders

Susana Rodriguez
Founding Lirio Montessori Teacher Leader

Susana has been involved with bringing Montessori education to Latinx communities for over six years. She is passionate about increasing access to this transformative education for all who seek it. She first discovered Montessori when the nonprofit organization she worked for decided to partner with the Montessori Center of Minnesota to bring Montessori education to diverse communities. She, like many parents came to believe in Montessori through her child’s experience in the Children’s House. Susana completed her AMI Montessori Primary (ages 3-6) training through the Montessori Center of Minnesota as a Women United Scholar in May of 2018. Prior to graduating with her AMI diploma she received an Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education and is pursuing her Bachelor’s degree. As a child, Susana and her family came to the United States in 1994 from Mexico, eventually settling in Minnesota. Here, Susana met her husband and together they have two children, ages 8 and 11. In her spare time Susana enjoys hiking, dancing, bowling and spending time with her family and friends.

Maya Soriano
Founding Lirio Montessori Teacher Leader

Maya was born in South Korea and raised in the Twin Cities.  She attended the College of St. Benedict and double majored in Peace Studies and Psychology. She studied abroad for 6 months in Guatemala, becoming fluent in Spanish and learning about liberation theology. Maya joined Teach for America and worked in Los Angeles before coming back to MN in 2011 when her son was born and worked at a dual immersion school teaching 1st grade for 4 years.  She stumbled upon Montessori when searching for preschool options for her son. She fell in love with the philosophy and saw the potential within Montessori to be a transformational vehicle for educational equity for students of all backgrounds, in particular, those in the global majority. She envisioned a school that was accessible and welcoming to all families, in particular Latino families wanting to send their children to dual language programs, and Lirio was born as a result. Maya attended the Montessori Center of MN to receive her master’s of education and her AMI certification. Maya lives with her two boys and Havanese Rexito. Her youngest will be attending Lirio this fall.

About Wildflower Schools

Wildflower is an ecosystem of decentralized Montessori micro-schools that support children, teachers, and parents. Our schools aspire to give all children and families the opportunity to choose high quality, beautiful learning environments as they follow life’s unfolding journey.

Our aim is to be an experiment in a new learning environment, blurring the boundaries between home and school, between scientists and teachers, between schools and the neighborhoods around them. Our schools are small and teacher-led, with deep parent engagement. At the core of Wildflower are 9 principles that define the approach.

Our network is supported by a foundation that works to build capacity, systems, tools and research to grow and strengthen the network.

Our Principals

Blurring the boundaries between home-schooling and institutional schooling, between scientists and teachers, between schools and the neighborhoods around them. At the core of Wildflower are 9 principles that define the approach.

Read about them here.

Our Network

After the first Wildflower school was created in January of 2014, there was intense interest in the school and the approach. This interest led us to open-source the model and help other family groups and teacher-leaders to create new Wildflower schools. Each teacher-leader at each Wildflower school serves on the board of at least one other Wildflower school, creating a community of schools that are linked by both a shared philosophy and a network of shared relationships.
